Magnesium hydroxide is sparingly soluble in water and alcohol, easily soluble in dilute acids and ammonium salt solutions, and is a medium strong base. Its solubility in water (18°C) is 0.0009 g/100 g, easily absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, transforms into hexagonal crystal system when heated to above 200°C in alkaline solution, decomposes into magnesium oxide and water at 350°C, and loses water to transform into magnesium oxide above 500°C. Particle size 1.5-2 μm, mesh 10000, whiteness ≥95.
Magnesium hydroxide is currently recognized as an excellent flame retardant with triple functions of flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and filling in the rubber and plastic industries. It has characteristics such as halogen-free, low smoke, non-toxic, anti-drip, acid resistance, odorless, good stability, non-volatile, high decomposition temperature, and non-corrosive to equipment. It is the preferred material for halogen-free flame retardancy of organic polymers. Magnesium hydroxide flame retardant releases bound water when heated and decomposes, absorbing a large amount of latent heat to lower the surface temperature of the synthetic material it fills in the flame. It inhibits polymer decomposition and cools the combustible gases produced. The magnesium oxide generated by decomposition is also a good refractory material, helping to improve the fire resistance of synthetic materials. At the same time, the water vapor released can also act as a smoke suppressant.
