Meanwhile, global environmental regulations continue to tighten, and halogen-free has become an irreversible development direction for ink flame retardant technology. In circuit board printing inks, flame retardants can inhibit arc propagation and ensure that equipment passes the UL 94 VTM-0 vertical burning test. In LED packaging materials, flame retardants can prevent material carbonization and ignition caused by local overheating. In scenarios such as children’s toy packaging, automotive interior markings, and building fireproof coatings, ink flame retardancy is also a necessary means to meet safety standards such as EU EN 71-3 and GB 8410-2006.

Currently, the mainstream solution for flame retardants used in inks is centered on phosphorus-nitrogen based halogen-free flame retardants. Their flame retardant mechanism involves generating phosphoric anhydride and nitrogen gas when heated, which both forms a heat-insulating char layer and dilutes the oxygen concentration, achieving the UL94 V-0 flame retardant standard. Traditional brominated flame retardants are increasingly restricted due to environmental risks, and phosphorus-nitrogen halogen-free solutions have become the mainstream choice. In addition, intumescent flame retardant systems (IFR) are also applicable to the ink field. They use ammonium polyphosphate as a dehydrating agent, pentaerythritol as a char-forming agent, and melamine as a foaming agent. When heated, a dense carbonaceous foam layer forms on the coating surface, achieving multiple functions of heat insulation, oxygen isolation, and smoke suppression. UV-curable halogen-free flame retardants are another important direction—by introducing phosphorus-containing compounds onto unsaturated anhydrides and reacting them with secondary amine compounds, a phosphorus-nitrogen synergistic flame retardant is obtained; then unsaturated double bonds are introduced to produce a UV-curable halogen-free flame retardant suitable for high-end scenarios such as solder mask inks.

Selecting a flame retardant for inks requires comprehensive consideration of multiple requirements. Compatibility with the ink system is crucial—the flame retardant must be uniformly dispersed in the ink without affecting rheological properties; excessively large particle sizes can easily lead to abnormal viscosity or coating defects. For transparent inks, flame retardants with a particle size of ≤5 μm should be selected to maintain light transmittance. Thermal stability is also critical. The thermal decomposition temperature of the flame retardant must be higher than 300°C to ensure long-term use safety, and it should not decompose prematurely during the drying process at 70–100°C.

Dongguan Hongtaiji Flame Retardant Materials Co., Ltd. has been deeply engaged in the research and development of environmentally friendly flame retardants for more than 20 years. Its independently developed phosphorus-nitrogen based halogen-free environmentally friendly flame retardant specially for inks appears as a white powder and features small particle size, narrow particle size distribution, easy dispersion, and high flame retardant efficiency. This product is mainly used for polyester, epoxy resin, and acrylic fire-retardant paints or coatings, as well as for flame retardancy of tapes and adhesive cloths used in electronic and electrical products.

[52,50

post-1578","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-52","category-industrial-news
["GET
